If you’ve wondered whether voting really matters, the recent elections in Cleveland and Chicago are the proof you need to.
The prosecutors who tragically botched the Tamir Rice and Laquan McDonald cases recently lost re-election and their jobs. The message we sent was loud and clear:
When elected officials act as though our lives don’t matter, and intentionally delay serving justice, NAACP members and allies demonstrate in the streets, and defeat them at the ballot box.
The results in Illinois and Ohio weren’t a given. Anita Alvarez, the state’s attorney in Chicago, declined to prosecute 68 cops involved in fatal shootings in the last seven years, yet continued to win elections.
But this time, we came together and made sure we were heard, via protest and the ballot, and put into office leaders committed to justice.
Two officials who showed a clear disregard for our issues have lost re-election. And now, new officials will come into office knowing they will be held accountable if they stand on the wrong side of justice.
That’s the power of NAACP membership. When you join, you become part of a giant community of civil rights activists that gets things done.
